Jubilee Year

The Navy This Week

  • Welcome to the Naval Club website. Memorable dates for this week are:-

  • 8 March 1940.  HMS Dunedin & HMCS Assiniboine took the German MV Hannover off Puerto Rico.  She was then rebuilt and commissioned as the first escort carrier HMS Empire.

  • 9 March 1959.  HMS Ashanti, the first of 8 Tribal class frigates, launched at Yarrows.  The first frigates with gas turbines, guided missiles, an integral helicopter, full air conditioning, cafeteria messing and bunk sleeping.

  • 10 March 1777.  James Aitken (Jack the Painter) hanged at the gate of Portsmouth Dockyard from a 67 ft high gibbet made from HMS Arethusa's mizzen mast for setting fire to the Rope House.  His body was then hung in chains at Block House Point.

  • 11 March 1708.  The Cruisers & Convoys Act allocated prize money to captors at the Crown's expense; a great incentive to Captains and Crews.

  • 12 March 1909.  Australia & New Zealand offered to provide a battlecruiser each to the Royal Navy.

  • 13 March 1801.  "I hate your pen & ink men: a fleet of British ships of war are the best negotiators in Europe." - Nelson to Lady Hamilton on his way to Copenhagen.

  • 14 March 1921.  New Zealand Naval Board instituted by Order in Council.  RNZN founded 1 October 1941.

  • 15 March 1360.  Winchelsea burned by the French.  Cinque Port ships captured 13 enemy ships and killed 400 men.  The churchyard had to be enlarged to accommodate them and is still called Deadmen's Lane.
