The Navy This Week

  • Welcome to the Naval Club website. Memorable dates for this week are:-

  • 8 February 1963.  First experimental touch-and-go by VTOL P1127 (forerunner of the Harrier) on HMS Ark Royal off Portland.

  • 9 February 1746.  HMS Portland captured the French Auguste 80 miles SE of the Scillies and towed her into Plymouth with 144 dead on board.

  • 10 February 1906.  HMS Dreadnought launched by King Edward VII, having been built in a year and a day.  First major vessel driven by turbines.

  • 11 February 1964.  GC awarded posthumously to CPO J Rogers, DSM, RAN for gallantry at sinking of HMAS Voyager after collision with HMAS Melbourne.

  • 12 February 1942.  The Channel Dash.  German ships Gneisenau, Scharnhorst and Prinz Eugen escaped up Channel from Brest in spite of air and sea attacks. 'The most glorious failure in British naval history.'

  • 13 February 1913.  First cadets entered RAN College, Osborne House, Geelong, later moving to the new RAN College at Jervis Bay. 

  • 14 February 1779.  Captain James Cook (HMS Resolution) murdered by natives of Hawaii during his third voyage of exploration.

  • 15 February 1968.  First British Polaris missile fired from HMS Resolution, submerged 30 miles off Cape Kennedy.

The Naval Club is the ideal place to stay in London, whether for business or pleasure. In the heart of fashionable Mayfair, the Club occupies a listed Georgian Town House, the 18th Century residence of the Earl of Chatham, brother of William Pitt the Younger, Prime Minister of Great Britain.

Members can hold private and corporate functions and business meetings using our comfortable facilities and elegant function rooms. Accommodation is available in our 25 bedrooms. The Club offers a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in a setting where all those interested in the sea and maritime affairs can feel at home. It is not necessary to have served in the Navy to become a member.

The Naval Club welcomes both individual, corporate and family members. Special weekend breaks are now available.
