The Navy This Week

  • Welcome to the Naval Club website. Memorable dates for this week are:-

  • 30 August 1945.   Liberation of Hong Kong.  Rear Admiral C.H.J. Harcourt, flag in Swiftsure entered harbour.  Five hundred men landed from Swiftsure and Euryalus, who cleared the dockyard that evening.

  • 31 August 1992.  First women join Royal Marines as musicians. 

  • 1 September 1958.  First fishery dispute began with Iceland.

  • 2 September 1945.  VC: CPO George Prowse. DSM RNVR. Drake Battalion RND France: for gallantry in attack on the Hindenburg Line.  Last award on blue ribbon.

  • 3 September 1939.  War declared against Germany.

  • 4 September 1995.  RN Detention Quarters (RNDQs) at Portsmouth closed and all personnel in detention transferred to the Military Corrective Training Centre (MCTC) Colchester.

  • 5 September 1941.   First German acoustic/magnetic mine recovered.

  • 6 September 1993.   The Queen approved the eligibility of all ranks of the armed forces for appointment to the Distinguished Service Order.

The Naval Club is the ideal place to stay in London, whether for business or pleasure. In the heart of fashionable Mayfair, the Club occupies a listed Georgian Town House, the 18th Century residence of the Earl of Chatham, brother of William Pitt the Younger, Prime Minister of Great Britain.

Members can hold private and corporate functions and business meetings using our comfortable facilities and elegant function rooms. Accommodation is available in our 25 bedrooms. The Club offers a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in a setting where all those interested in the sea and maritime affairs can feel at home. It is not necessary to have served in the Navy to become a member.

The Naval Club welcomes both individual, corporate and family members. Special weekend breaks are now available.
